Hi everyone. Thanks for visiting my website. It makes me so happy that you
enjoy my books. You see, the reason I write them in the first place, is
simply to make you smile. But sometimes, you may actually learn something
from my stories. So sit back, relax, and let my stories take you away
to where your imagination can run free. Although it is more important to me that you get to know and care about my storybook characters, sometimes people want to know a bit about me. Since all of my stories come from real life and the lives of others close to me, maybe it is important to share my own life story with you. So here goes. I became interested in writing for enjoyment when I was in 8th grade at Birchland Park School, in my hometown of East Longmeadow, MA. Mr. O'Hearn, my English teacher thought I had talent and encouraged me to consider writing as a career one day. Well, I didn't do what he said but went to Music School, then Nursing school after I graduated. But all through that time, I remembered my teacher's words of encouragement, and continued to use writing as a creative outlet. I loved to write poems and short stories. I even enjoyed just writing letters to my friends. When my children were born, I started writing and sharing little stories with them. Then one day, our dog Mabel took her famous unauthorized trip on the Islesboro Island Ferry, ending up at a Lobster restaurant on the mainland. That event is what inspired me to become a published author. I thought, this is such a funny story; I should share it with children everywhere. And I did. You can read all about Mabel's true adventures in my books "Mabel Takes the Ferry", "Mabel Takes a Sail" and "Mabel Takes A Paddle."

Since Mabel's famous ferry trip, I have written many more books, traveled far and wide, and spoken and appeared at so many places that I can't remember. I've been through many changes in my personal life as well. My kids are grown and on their own. My sweetheart George and I have happily relocated to beautiful New Hampshire. Villi Poni Farm is our forever home and exactly where we want to be. Living here is a real inspiration for me, both for upcoming books and my monthly column in the award-winning Monadnock Ledger-Transcript. These days I run into fans who grew up on my books, and are buying them now for their own children! Wow, does that make me feel old, but also very happy... The reissue of Mabel Takes The Ferry has that same effect. In 1995, at my very first book signing, the buyer for the Owl and Turtle bookstore, in Camden Maine, told me that I "really had something here" when she read Mabel Takes the Ferry. Little did I know then how right she was...and what incredible paths Mabel would be taking me down. Emily  |
